I have compiled the headlines and summaries of news reports and commentary published in the media during the roughly 1.5-month period from Narin Güran’s disappearance on 21 August 2024 to the opening days of the trial. In doing so, I prepared a roadmap for myself to examine the journalistic errors related to the Narin murder.

Additionally, for those who have read my analysis titled “12 media errors that influenced the judiciary in the Narin murder”, the following timeline emerged so that they can see the atmosphere that was created in the media during those days:

TIMELINE OF NARIN COVERAGE (21 August – 7 November 2024)

21 AUGUST

  • Narin went to her Quran course after having lunch. However, she did not return home after the course. Footage appeared on the primary school’s camera at 15:15 (TV100).

22 AUGUST

  • Gendarmerie, AFAD and medical teams launched a search in the village. A single slipper, claimed to belong to Narin, was found 3 kilometres from the village.

24 AUGUST

  • Mobilisation for Narin / Mother Yüksel Güran: The slipper found is not Narin’s (Akşam / Sabah / ATV / Haber Global).

25 AUGUST

  • She vanished on the hilltop road / Narin’s last image emerged / A 100-person special team is searching (Akşam / Sabah / Sözcü / DHA / Star TV).

26 AUGUST

  • Blood on the rock does not belong to Narin / False tip-offs infuriated searchers (Akşam).
  • Narin’s mother Yüksel Güran appeared on Didem Aslan Yılmaz’s programme (Show TV).

27 AUGUST

  • Blood trace belongs to the cousin (Akşam / Sabah).
  • Narin’s father protested against false tip-offs (TGRT Haber).

28 AUGUST

  • Gendarmerie Major General Selçuk Yıldırım issued a statement saying “The circle is closing, Narin could be found at any moment” (Medyascope).

29 AUGUST

  • Elder brother Enes was detained due to a bite mark on his arm. However, the owner of the teeth marks could not be determined (Hürriyet / Sabah / Enson Haber / Halk TV).
  • Diyarbakır 5th Magistrate’s Court imposed a media blackout (A Haber).

30 AUGUST

1 SEPTEMBER

2 SEPTEMBER

  • The hashtag #NarinNerede became one of the most shared hashtags in Türkiye on X.
  • Teams searching for Narin found clothing in a cornfield / The entire village is installing cameras / Narin’s uncle is being questioned by a special team (Akşam / Sabah).
  • Narin’s uncle Salim Güran was arrested on charges of premeditated murder (Haber Global).
  • Latest findings in the search for Narin / Retired detective assessed the case (NTV).

3 SEPTEMBER

  • Uncle arrested for ‘premeditated murder’ / It had emerged that the uncle’s phone was off for “1 hour” (Akşam / Sabah).

4 SEPTEMBER

6 SEPTEMBER

8 SEPTEMBER
